The Direct Patient Care Companion (DPCC) is a clinical documentation and tracking tool that embraces the principles of Pharmaceutical Care as outlined in the Direct Patient Care Curriculum published by the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists (CSHP). The software is developed by DKK Health Systems Inc. with support and input from CSHP and the DPCC Advisory Working Group. Apotex Inc. provided financial support for the development of the project.

The objectives of this software are:

bulletTo provide a structured and guided approach for the user to practice Pharmaceutical Care;
bulletTo maintain a current and historical database of patient data;
bulletTo efficiently collate and retrieve clinical patient data;
bulletTo facilitate the assimilation of patient data to arrive at the drug-related-problem statements, pharmacy care plans, follow-up plans and outcome documentation;
bulletTo generate work list reports for day to day activities;
bulletTo generate summaries/statistical reports of Pharmaceutical Care progress on demand;
bulletTo provide a means for clinical workload measurement;
bulletTo allow easy transfer of patient data from one site to another for Seamless Care.

Highlights of the DPCC design are:

bulletcompatible with Windows 3.1x, Windows 95/98, and Windows NT;
bulletstand-alone or network use;
bulletintuitive and user friendly (uses standard Windows interface);
bulletmodular design (other clinical tools will be added & integrated);
bulletdata coded for analysis.

Availability:

The beta version has undergone a month evaluation period at 8 Canadian hospitals, both teaching and community hospitals. Version 1.0 was released in October 1998 and is now available for subscription from CSHP.
